Polypropylene Plastic Resin

The Polypropylene market made its big move during the first quarter of 2004, rising about 9-10 cents in both the spot and contract market. Since then, offers for good railcars have maintained their levels in the high 30s and low 40s with copolymer trading about $.02/lb higher than homopolymer. Spot trading was very active in May, and late buying has bid the market back up to season highs.

After firming the last 2 weeks of April, the market paused in early May. The spot market was well supplied with good offgrade and generic prime resin and prices retreated slightly, as buyers were content to just watch the market develop. Then Crude oil made record highs and a price increase was nominated for propylene monomer so the resin market began to heat up. Towards the end of the month, as price protection was burning off on the remaining $.04/lb Polypropylene resin price increase, aggressive buying came in to push spot prices 2-3 cents higher.

Tremendous worldwide demand for oil, particularly from China, on top of a $6-8 war premium, has pushed Crude oil prices to record highs. Even at prices well above $2/gallon, US Gasoline usage is still very strong. This competitive demand diverts potential propylene supplies to be refined for gasoline rather than used for manufacturing polymers. It is just added pressure keeping Propylene prices elevated in the low 30s.

Even though imports of plastics goods have wreaked havoc on certain segments of the US plastics industry, other sections have been defended by the shear dimension of the finished product. While it is very efficient to ship PE film/bags in a container because of the very high density of the film, other products, like caps/closures and large houseware products are often inefficient to ship because one ends up shipping lots of air. This has leant a certain level of protection to these markets by reducing potential competitive imported products and has instead allowed US manufactures of such goods to be more in control of their market and pass along increased raw material costs.

At the moment, the polypropylene market is in a healthier state than the PE market. Resin producers have been able to pass along higher feedstock costs to the processor and since resin prices have consolidated at this relatively high level, it has compelled PP processors to also pass along the higher costs to their customers of finished goods. It appears that margin is intact though the supply chain.

While demand has been excellent, it will be interesting to see if polypropylene usage is really that good, or if much of the buying in May was from large processors buying ahead of the increase taking effect. Either way, it has been an endorsement of the current price level and we will keep you posted.


Polystyrene prices were stable in mid-high 50s during the first half of May, but then continued their trek higher as the month advanced. Buyers have been holding out as long as possible before making their purchases, waiting for price relief that just does not arrive. However, prices are now on the rise again.

Feedstock pressures are pushing PS producers to remove the $.04/lb TVA that they gave on their May price increase and are now implementing it in June. To show that they are serious, producers have backed this up with another $.03/lb increase announced for July.

The spot market remains tightly supplied as producers are still mostly allocating production only to forecasted orders.

Benzene prices have made another move higher, now around $2.60/gal and styrene monomer is in the low 40s. To add to the supply pressure, a PS plant in Illinois was struck by lightning and has lead to a force majeure situation. Demand is suffering at these price levels, but feedstock costs and production issues will keep the market firm for now.

Changing Metal Properties With Heat Treatment

Throughout history people have been creating things from different metals. Presumably the discovery of metal was an accident and probably caused inadvertently when a campfire burnt away some low melting point metal bearing ore and left the bewildered ancient with a crude metal lump.

Most likely the first such metal would have been tin as this has the lowest melting point by far of all other common metals. At two hundred and thirty two degrees centigrade the core of the fire would not have to be particularly hot to extract tin unlike iron which needs one thousand five hundred and thirty degrees to melt.

The melting point of metals vary a great amount and as the discovery of tin extraction became more and more understood and easier to achieve, the ancients of Mesopotamia and at the same time China, began looking for other metals. Tin was a useful metal but far too soft to create anything much more than plates, pots and ornaments. The next big step was the discovery of copper with tin deposits and this alloy we know of as bronze.

With a melting point of just under one thousand degrees centigrade, bronze could be fashioned into a much stronger finished product. For the first time metal swords and other weapons could be made as well as intricate jewellery mounted with precious stones.

Today bronze is still a valued alloy. With the addition of less than one per cent phosphor, the alloy can be easy to cast with an exceptionally smooth finish. This tough alloy known as phosphor bronze has a very low coefficient of friction making it ideal and nearly always the preferred metal of ships propellers. It has the additional property of not sparking which makes it ideal for electrical contacts. Screws made of phosphor bronze are used whenever there is the threat of electrical shorting and water.

Any metal can be heated to change its properties and every metal has some unique uses. Heat treatment of steel along with quick but not harsh cooling can toughen the original product. During heating magnetic alignments can be changed and this will also change the properties of the original.

Heat treatment is used to add subsidiary metals creating alloys for very specific uses. There are many types of aluminium die casting alloys for specific purposes and NASA and European as well as Russian space agencies all use the same particular Aluminium alloy for their space craft.

Over thousands of years men have been making things out of pure metals and alloys. The values of all metals can change with the discovery of new uses. For example, when catalytic converters were first discovered in the late 1980s the catalyst used in the exhaust system to convert carbon monoxide into harmless air and water was a mix of palladium and rhodium. Prices of these two metals shot up in value and later when more cars were being produced globally with diesel engines, palladium dropped heavily as Platinum took over.

The organization of aluminum die casting is loose, the pore rate is high, and contains a variety of metal and non-metallic impurities. The quality of anodic oxidation film is difficult to guarantee. In order to obtain normal oxidation film quality and avoid appearing white spots after Anodic oxidation film dyeing, we should take the following measures.
1.    The method of high voltage large current density impact
Adopt high voltage, high current surge in the initial period of the anodic oxidation can make the “island” that originally divided by the impurities connect a piece. The specific process is as follows:
Adjust the initial voltage of the anodic oxidation to 30V around. The current density now is about 2 ~ 2.5 A/dm2. After 3 ~ 5 min, return to the normal voltage of the anodic oxidation. After 50 min anodic oxidation and fully cleaning, it can be dyed out more satisfied oxidation film, and there are no white spots generally.
The slight deficiency of the method above is if the casting has a screw hole, the hole may be expanded slightly. So people should control the density of large current and the anode oxidation time of high voltage to prevent the temperature of the anode oxidation solution rising too fast. Continuous production need to take cooling measures on anodic oxidation solution.
2.    The method of grinding on the casting surface
Grinding can produce the aluminum ends. Use the aluminum ends to fill the hole of the casting. And it has the bridge effect between each “island”. This method is not so good as the first method. Because the aluminum ends may lose the bridge effect sometimes and the filler of some parts will fall off in the alkali erosion and anodic oxidation process.
3.    The method of peening the casting surface
The wall of general aluminum die casting can satisfy the pressure requirement of the peening method. It can close the pores and apertures, and improve the strength and neatness of the aluminum casting. It is the best way in the three methods.
